The Wildling Art Museum’s spring exhibition, “Abbrescia’s Passion: Plein-air Paintings of Glacier National Park”, featured the work of Joseph Leonard Abbrescia (1936-2005). Born 1936 in Yonkers, New York, Abbrescia demonstrated an early talent for drawing and painting. After his formal training at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, he went on to work as an Army illustrator, a commercial artist and eventually established in 1965, the Village Art School in Skokie, Illinois, with this brothers Dominick and John. Over the years, Abbrescia earned many awards for his outstanding work and also conducted lectures, workshops, demonstrations, and panel discussions for different art organizations. In 1998, Abbrescia was named Artist in Residence at Glacier National Park. The paintings in this exhibition are thought of as Abbrescia’s personal tour through the wilderness subject he loved most, Glacier National Park.
