The Wildling honored the late Dick Smith with the Wilderness Spirit Award from the Wildling Art Museum. The evening began with the grand opening of the fall exhibition, “Dick Smith and His Back Country Wilderness.” Hors d’oeuvres and wine were served in the garden of the Museum while guests had the opportunity to watch talented artists Jim Farnum, Ellie Freudenstein, and Rick Schloss work to complete their paintings within 45-minutes. Later, these paintings were a part of an exciting live auction. In addition, there were three special raffle opportunities.

Next, the party continued just a few steps away in the courtyard of Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church.

A live auction preceded the main course and later, we honored the late Dick Smith and presented the Wilderness Spirit Award to his family. Barney Brantingham was present to say a few words about his old friend and colleague at the “Santa Barbara News-Press.” This award is presented by the Board of Directors of the Wildling Art Museum to an individual or organization whose efforts have contributed to a greater understanding and appreciation of America’s Wilderness. Past recipients have included Ray Strong, Ansel Adams, the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County, and Bob Kuhn.

Guests from Santa Barbara could start the celebration early by signing up for a round-trip bus ride. Wine, cheese, and good cheer set the tone for an entertaining evening.

Tickets for the benefit were $135 per person. Tickets for the bus were $15 per person. Tables were available to both businesses and individuals at the Sponsor and Patron levels.

The Wildling Art Museum would like to thank our sponsors for their generous support
