Gwen Cates
paints landscapes in
magnificent locations and plays with various ideas in Calavira Studio,
a large metal barn on her property in the Santa Ynez Valley. Gwen is a
native Virginian who moved to California in 1999 with her husband,
Bill, who has Tantara Winery. A painterly realist colorist,
Gwen has been working professionally as an artist for almost three
decades.
Gwen has had solo exhibits at Edith Grove Gallery in London followed by one person shows at Alex Gallery in the Du Pont Circle area of Washington D.C. as well as numerous exhibits in Virginia and California Galleries. Colorscapes, a solo exhibit of Gwen landscapes, was shown at the Elverhoj Museum in 2006. Early this year. Gwen received a Santa Barbara Art Association monetary award at the Faulkner Gallery in Santa Barbara. Gwen studied Fine Art at Virginia Commonwealth University and later at Hollins University where she graduated with honors.
