Gwen Cates is a painterly realist colorist who
paints oils on location and creates abstract collage and figurative
work in her studio. Recently, she joined SCAPE artists on a painting
trip to Santa Cruz Island.
Cates has had solo exhibits at the Edith Grove Gallery in London followed by one person shows at Alex Gallery in the Du Pont Circle area of Washington D.C. as well as numerous exhibits in Virginia and California Galleries. She has been exhibiting professionally for over two decades.
Cates most recent solo exhibit, Colorscapes, was at the Elverhoj Museum gallery in the spring of 2006. Cates has twice been a featured artist for the Santa Barbara County Vintners Association Spring Festival at Firestone Meadows. In 2004, Fox Searchlight displayed her Santa Barbara County landscapes at the Gala Premier of Sideways. Her solo shows include Artist of the Month at the San Luis Artists Gallery and exhibits of recent landscapes at Tantara Winerys spring and fall Open Houses, an exhibit at the Faulkner Gallery East in Santa Barbara, An Evening of Tantara Wines and Gwen Cates Art hosted by Los Olivos Wines and Spirits Emporium, and an exhibit at ArtBrut in Los Alamos.
Cates studied Fine Art at Virginia Commonwealth University and later at Hollins University where she graduated with honors.
Her paintings are in collections in England, Europe, and the United States including Radford University, presidents executive office suite, Radford, Virginia; Patrick A. Feiner private collection, Amsterdam, Netherlands; General Motors – Fanuc, Detroit, Michigan; Jonathan Rogers Law office, Roanoke, VA and the City of Roanoke Permanent Collection, Roanoke Civic Enter Auditorium.
