Learn to speak fluent nature with Fred and Larry Los Alamos County Park, Los Alamos Saturday, March 17, 9:00-11:30 a.m. Restrooms available Fee: $25 non-members; $20 members Call: Holly at 686-8315 for more information and reservations. Join Dr. Fred Emerson and botanist Larry Ballard for an enjoyable Saturday morning naturalist class! Known as one of the "hidden treasurers," the class will travel through Coast Live oak woodland and grasslands on this 51-acre park at the mouth of Drum Canyon. Noted naturalist and birder, Dr. Emerson will be your knowledgeable guide into the fascinating avian world and noted botanist Larry Ballard will be your knowledeable guide into the local plants. Together this dynamic duo will discuss the local ecology and natural history of the sites visited. The class is suited for mature children (accompanied by an adult and able to handle binoculars), teens, and adults. Fun and educational for the whole family! |

Gourd Art Workshop Wildling Art Museum Saturday, March 24, 1:00-4:00 p.m. Fee: $35 non-members; $30 members (additional $15 materials fee) Call: Holly at 686-8315 for more information and reservations. Learn to make a beautiful gourd vessal with artist Cathy McGavin. Students will learn how to properly use a wood-burning tool and dyes to make their own designer gourd. The weekend of March 30 through April 1 has been selected as the perfect time during the 2012 season to be in the Santa Ynez Valley to learn the "Language of Landscape Art." |

Join Dr. Fred Emerson and botanist Larry Ballard for an enjoyable Saturday morning naturalist class! With special permission, the class will visit Rancho la Vina, an historic rancho situated in the Santa Rita Hills. The class will explore the area surrounding a natural, year-round spring and oak woodland. Noted naturalist and birder, Dr. Emerson will be your knowledgeable guide into the fascinating avian world and noted botanist Larry Ballard will be your knowledeable guide into the local plants. Together this dynamic duo will discuss the local ecology and natural history of the sites visited. Learn to speak fluent nature with Fred and Larry La Purisima Mission, Lompoc Saturday, May 19, 9:00-11:30 a.m. Small parking fee. Join Dr. Fred Emerson and botanist Larry Ballard for an enjoyable Saturday morning naturalist class! This will be the last class before the break during the summer months. This two mile loop trail, some of it in soft sand, will visit a number of different habitats found within the park. We'll see endemic species of maritime chaparral (locally known as Burton Mesa Chaparral), including Lompoc Ceanothus and Purisima Manzanita. We may catch a glimpse of the Lompoc Small Blue, a tiny butterfly that is endemic to the Lompoc area. Noted naturalist and birder, Dr. Emerson will be your knowledgeable guide into the fascinating avian world and noted botanist Larry Ballard will be your knowledeable guide into the local plants.
